Pockets hidden under pocket hoops and accessed through slits in the petticoats ladies usually carried keys, make up, gems, etc. Double or single pockets were tied about the waist and could be lost, like Lucy Locket.
Pockets were beautifully embroidered even though they were under several layers, a great sampler project and often a young girls first item to make.
I’m not so sure about purses, but if its anything like modern times their purses were probably full of the stuff that didn’t fit in their husbands pockets 😉
