My preference would have been to have Claire have underarm hair, but I can easily understand the decision to nix it. It’s not quite the same, but I worked in the magazine industry where we’d have conversations about removing telephone wires, ceiling fans, and anything “unsightly” from images, so as not to distract readers. So while I prefer erring on the side of realism, I get the aesthetic concerns.
What I do appreciate about the show is its commitment to Claire’s curly hair. There is something (sadly) subversive about a woman with dark, frizzy hair being the star of a show, and portrayed as a sexual being to boot. In the hands of another creative time, I could easily see Claire’s hair getting the Hollywood treatment of Victoria’s Secret model beach waves rather than Claire’s cloud of curls–palatable curls, in other words.
