I personally think the camera work on this scene was a wonderful visual metaphor. The first thing you see is the firelight playing over his disfigured back (kudos to the makeup artist!) before exposing his perfectly unblemished backside. An arresting contrast and a visual reference to Jamie’s soul, marked by BJR but beautiful still.

Of course while watching the scene most people are not analyzing this intellectually. DG was asked what her visceral reaction to watching the scene was. I think she was acknowledging the elephant in the room when she says the equivalent of ‘nice ass’. Politically incorrect and socially unacceptable but true. She sounded embarrassed sharing her honest reaction out loud and the audience laughed in acknowledgement. She wasn’t trying to embarrass Sam.
