Just replicating the waistcoat that is worn by Jaime in the Outlander tv series, which has a partially split back with lacing. I think the lacing here is for sizing it so could be worn by either different sized men or by one man as he changed sizes over time. And I tried the design I described above but turned the garment through the sides which I left open and it worked fine! Putting a facing in around the split in the back is key to having enough stiffening for the lacing holes.
